Injecting considerable European talent into the WHA, Anders Hedberg signed with the Winnipeg Jets with fellow countryman Ulf Nilsson in 1974, and played alongside the Golden Jet Bobby Hull. Hedberg was instrumental in the Avco Cup championships of 1976 and 1978, with the high-scoring Swede the first player in history to score 70 goals in under 70 games, accomplishing the feat with the very puck offered from his personal collection. Occurring during the 1976-77 WHA season, Hedberg secured his milestone 70th goal in his 68th game, on April 7, 1977 vs the Calgary Cowboys. A Biltrite model with embossed “Made in Canada”, a screened Cowboys emblem resides on the obverse and WHA logo on the reverse, with period tape added to the side with handwritten particulars that include “Anders 70 – 1977 April 8/77”, along with a signature added later in blue marker and dated “Nov 10, 2020”. A signed LOA from Anders Hedberg will accompany this important historic puck.
The puck exhibits expected use including surface wear, with the tape slightly darkening over time. As mentioned, Hedberg was the very first player in history to secure 70 goals in under 70 games. Other players had previously scored over 70 goals including Bobby Hull in 1974-75, Marc Tardif in 1975-76 and Phil Esposito in 1970-71, but none were able to accomplish the feat in under 70 games.
