Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
A mind-boggling/blowing collection of little cards issued by W.C. MacDonald in packs of British Consols Cigarettes over most of the 1940s is up for grabs here, with card fronts depicting WWII-era airplanes and warships, while the majority of the backs picture a playing card and include an offer to obtain "full-size playing cards." Then there are cards that do not depict playing cards on the backs, with numerous variations. There are more than forty known series issued over a decade, with a new series printed every few months as evidenced by specific offer expiration dates found on the backs. To say that this is a complex set is an understatement! Hockey card collectors have always found intriguing the "jokers" which depict an early toque-wearing player on an outdoor rink - we spot a dozen such cards in this hoard. The fascinating, years-in-the-making collection (of over 600!) is sure to keep the new owner busy/entertained for hours upon hours, with a list of what is included below.
