Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, the M&M Boys, battled throughout the summer of 1961, slugging in the shadow of Babe Ruth in a quest to break the Sultan of Swat’s single season home run record of 60. Maris pulled away after an injury left Mantle stuck at 54 homers, and in the end tied and then broke Ruth’s record with his 60th and 61st homers to claim his second straight AL MVP Award.
Maris, who died in 1985, placed a blue ink pen autograph on the sweet spot of this Rawlings Lee MacPhail official American League baseball which exhibits some toning areas on all panels, including on the sweet spot, with the signature standing out nicely overall. A PSA/DNA label, numbered "D66065", is applied just below the Rawlings logo which is matching the one on the included LOA from PSA/DNA.
