Wonderfully designed through the eyes of novice artists, this Inuit soapstone carving group totals six, with each once proudly owned by legendary Montreal Canadiens superstar Jean Beliveau. Highlighted by a large and heavy carving of two well detailed polar bears resting atop an icecap, a plaque has been affixed to the front, with engraved text that states “Presented to Jean Beliveau – with deep appreciation – by the Arthritis Society, Kitchener Volunteers – September 1997”. A few notations have been carved onto the underside, with no issues regarding condition. The second carving is triangular in shape and approx 7” in height, with hunting/fishing scenes carved into each side, with notations on the underside (2009). The third carving is a small bird expertly detailed, approx 3 ½” x 4”, with a sticker affixed to the underside. This is followed by a wonderful sprawling seal, approx 5” x 6” at the widest points, with a couple small chips visible. The fifth carving is a large seal, 4 ½” in height, with a well detailed face and a small section of his right leg broken off, with notations over the underside including a 1983 date. The final carving is a large and majestic seal 14” in length, with a “1992” date carved into the underside and no chips or breaks. An LOA from the Beliveau family will accompany.
