Arguably the most famous and storied team from the earliest days of the sport and the first club in history to raise Lord Stanley's prized cup in 1893, the Montreal Hockey Team represented the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA), known as the Winged Wheelers due to their winged wheel uniform - a design later borrowed by the Detroit Red Wings. Seven-time champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada from 1886 until 1898, the Montreal AAA remained an amateur club throughout it's existence. Up for grabs here, is this vintage Montreal Amateur Athletic Association 1902-03 Stanley Cup champions team photo. Originally hailing from the collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, his notes tell the tale of him receiving the piece July 29th 1953 and he received the piece from Jack Marshall which was originally owned by Dickie Boon, a player on the club and an instrumental figure in setting up the NHA in 1910. A vintage photograph produced sometime before 1953, after inspection it does not seem to date to 1902-03. Measuring roughly 9 ½” x 7”, the matting brings it to dimensions of 12 ½” x 10” while the cardboard that displays handwritten notations on the back speaking of the piece’s origin, brings it to dimensions of 16” x 12”. Of note, the photo/matting has come unaffixed from the cardboard backing. Remaining in excellent condition with some creasing present to the matting and some edge wear to the photograph itself, the names of the team’s players and staff are handwritten on the mat below the photo and include the likes of HOFers Dickie Boon, Tom Phillips, Jack Marshall and Jimmy Gardner. One of the best athletic clubs of its time, the Stanley Cup was still being disputed in the “challenge era” at the time the M.A.A.A. won their second straight Cup in February 1903.
