A three-time James Norris Trophy winner, Paul Coffey holds the NHL record for most combined regular season and playoffs goals with 455. The four-time Stanley Cup champion also holds the NHL single-season record for goals by a defenceman with 48. This photo-matched Edmonton Oilers jersey was worn by Coffey during his sophomore NHL season in 1981-82 - a campaign that witnessed 89 points scored in just 80 games, along with Second All-Star Team selection.
Currently void of any collar labeling and measuring-out to roughly a size 54, there is a Sandow SK logo heat-pressed over the reverse hem. Featuring the classic oil drop team crest with embroidered detailing, the iconic defenceman’s famous “7” graces the sleeves and verso in layered, tri-colour tackle twill, with “Coffey” over the nameplate in individually affixed letters. A loop-style fight strap has also been utilized (with tag attached), with the "International Year of Disabled Persons 1981" patch on the right shoulder. The nameplates were removed by the Oilers for pre-season use of the jerseys the following year, so most likely the jersey was also worn in the 1982-83 pre-season. It should also be noted that the original nameplates were sold with the jerseys, but in most cases had been removed, with the plates re-attached by an Edmonton company named RMC. This company handled the cresting and repairs of Oilers jerseys during the period, so it’s very likely that the nameplate currently affixed to the jersey is the original. Hailing from the Michael Wexler collection, this historically important sweater would fit comfortably in any advanced Edmonton Oilers, Paul Coffey or Hall of Fame jersey collection.
Exhibiting heavy and prolonged use, there is considerable surface wear to the material over the front and sleeves, with dark marks over the front visible including a washed-out stick mark beneath the team crest. There is also some pilling to the inner sleeves, with numerous team repairs present throughout, including 5 over the front, 4 on the right sleeve and 9 on the left. An included numeric image of Coffey with Garry Unger shows the washed-out black mark to the left of the team crest. The folding patterns in the upper area of the team crest are also visible, but it’s not clear enough to call a definitive photo-match. A second included image has been matched to the aforementioned washed-out black mark to the left of the team crest, as well as to the washed-out black mark below the team crest and to the team repair in the upper white striping on the lower front of the jersey. The third included numeric image has been matched to the previously mentioned washed-out black marks to the left and bottom of the team crest. Lastly, there is a numeric image showing the washed-out black marks on the lower left sleeve and back left hem, but the image is not high resolution enough to call a definitive photo-match.
