An inaugural member of the WHA and the first team to raise the Avco Cup, the New England Whalers were one of the few clubs - along with Winnipeg and Quebec - to last throughout the entirety of the league. Rechristened as Hartford after joining the NHL in 1979, the Whalers became the Carolina Hurricanes almost two decades later. We have a Whalers equipment bag from the 1970s attributed to Larry Pleau, along with a pair of vintage skates that were originally found in the bag. Somewhat smaller than the modern equipment bags currently employed by professional teams and in solid green, a label from Massachusetts maker Geco is affixed to one side, with “New England Whalers” and “4” screened in black directly beneath. Showing heavy use with a working zipper, there are a few marks, scuffs and stains, with wear to the reinforced leather corners. Pleau wore the #4 jersey throughout the club’s time in the WHA, from 1972-73 to 1978-79. The skates are CCM Tacks from the era, pro quality, with size 10 2/3 CCM Prolite blade. Nice use is exhibited, with intact vintage laces and ankles tie strings, along with wear over both the boots and blades including some minor surface rust.
