Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2019
One of baseball’s most iconic images and utilized for both his 1951 Bowman rookie card and 1953 Topps issue, we have a rare 1950s Mickey Mantle photo encapsulated and authenticated as Type II by PSA/DNA. Only recently culled from a vintage scrapbook along with 14 additional Yankees photos from the era and another 25 1948 picture pack New York Giants, the 8” x 10” photo exhibits a crease over the left hand side not affecting the image, with corner wear and a few minor surface blemishes. “Micky Mantle” (misspelt) has also been written in blue ink along the base, with what appears to be a couple cropping marks in pencil on the right and bottom borders, along with “2 5/8” written in pencil directly beneath the image. There is also a bit of staining/toning to the reverse, with two small areas with paper affixed, remnants from the scrapbook removal, with “Mickey Mantle” written in pencil along with “R-128”. With a Type I example selling for north of $70,000.00 in 2015, there should be considerable interest in the scarce, offered photo. Accompanied by an LOA from PSA/DNA, we should note that it erroneously lists the photo as a Type I.
As mentioned, the LOA incorrectly lists the photo as Type I, with both the label on the holder and PSA’s website deeming the photo as Type II, with the LOA stating, “Photo is a 1956-59 example that was made from the original negative featuring an image taken in 1951. Image was used for Mantle's 1951 Bowman Rookie card #253 & 1953 Topps card #82." The additional 8” x 10” Yankees photos include examples for Berra, Rizzuto (1955 Topps action image), Mize (Kansas City), Martin, Reynolds, McDonald, Stengel, Woodling, Collins, Lopat and a few others. We should also note that the Collins, Mize and McDonald photos all sport "New York Yankees..Player...Position" stamps over the reverse, with their name handwritten, with this matching the example found on the Type I Mantle photo sold in 2015. The majority of the photos show heavier wear with some bends and warping, with most affixed or partially-affixed to larger scrapbook pages. The additional 6 ½” x 9” Giants picture pack photos include Ott, Mize, Thompson and others, with each affixed to a larger scrapbook page, with toning visible along many of the left hand borders.
