Especially historic and a piece of Edmonton’s hockey history, we have the jersey from the WHA and later NHL genesis, with an Alberta Oilers Inaugural Season example worn by Ron Anderson while scoring the first-ever WHA and Oilers goal! A Western Athletic Supply label remains affixed to the inside hem, with the important garment measuring-out to roughly a size 44. Featuring chenille detailing to the oil drop team crest, “10” appears over the sleeves and verso in layered tackle twill, with “Alberta” printed over the canvas nameplate. The nameplates on these first set jerseys were removed and later re-attached, as is the case with this example. Heavy use is exhibited, with a bit of staining over the lower front band along with burns over the left shoulder and a few stick marks over the upper left sleeve. There is also surface wear to the sleeve numbers, pilling to the interior and staining along with team repairs on and near to the team crest, with additional repairs over each sleeve and the lower front.
Anderson scored the first goal in WHA/Oilers history by giving Alberta a 1-0 lead against the Ottawa Nationals on Oct. 11, 1972. The Oilers went on to notch a 7-4 victory.
