Veteran defenseman Poul Popiel’s 1977-78 Houston Aeros game-worn alternate captain’s home jersey is from the two-time Avco Cup champion’s last of six WHA seasons. Popiel was with the Aeros - the team that enticed Gordie Howe out of retirement to play with his sons, Mark and Marty - for their entire existence, from the outset of the rebel league in 1972-73 right through the end in 1978. The two-tone blue double twill A is sewn on the left breast of Popiel’s No. 6 white mesh gamer, which has Stall & Dean and laudry instruction tagging and size “50” and year “7” fly tags in the collar. Game wear includes black marks on the front and on the upper front of the left sleeve.
There are reddish-brown stains along and adjacent to the seam between the upper front and the left sleeve. Cascading “Aeros” on the front and numbers on the back and both sleeves are all two-tone blue double twill, with a royal blue layer on top of a light blue base, as are the “A” on the left breast and “P. Popiel” sewn on the white stretchy knit fabric nameplate on the back. There are a few rust spots on the cotton loop-style fight strap from its metal clasp. There is a loose blue thread on the back of the blue knit collar, and loose light blue threads on the cuffs of each sleeve.
Popiel, the first Danish-born NHL player, had 37 points (6 goals, 31 assists) while playing all 80 games for the Aeros in 1977-78. He had 62 goals and 265 assists for 327 points while playing 467 of Houston’s 474 regular season games in its six seasons in the WHA. He had 54 points in 224 NHL games with Boston, L.A., Detroit, Vancouver and Edmonton.
