Recognized for both his speed and agility and reputed to have once scored a goal while skating backwards, Cyclone Taylor remains one of early hockey’s greatest and most revered stars, with his scoring prowess for iconic clubs such as the Ottawa Silver Seven, Renfrew Creamery Kings and Vancouver Millionaires legendary. We have a vintage 8” x 10” photo of the superstar, with this image used famously for his 1910-11 C56 and 1912-13 C57 cards. A full-length pose with Taylor outfitted in his circa 1908-09 Ottawa Senators uniform, the photo exhibits what appears to be a proof or publishing mark along the top border, with an indentation line visible that completely outlines the full image. Originally affixed to a 9 ½” x 12” cardboard backing with wax paper cover, the photo is detached, with a “Roy Mitchell Photography” stamp over the reverse. A handwritten pencil notation is also present over the backing, stating “Roy Mitchell” and “Alexandria Studios Archives”, with the phone number suggesting circa-1950s production. “Airbrushed Surface – Handle With Care” is also stamped onto the front of the backing beneath where the photo was originally mounted, with heavy wear, toning and glue residue present. The photo itself is also somewhat warped, with creases present, along with the entirety of the reverse covered in glue residue.
