Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
This vintage wire and leather face mask, quite possibly worn for more than one sport, is similar in style to the mask worn by the netminder for the Japanese Ice Hockey Team at the 1936 Winter Olympics held in Germany. This example features two large circular eye holes along with a matching “spitter” mouth hole, with both the forehead and chin padding affixed through seven leather and metal clasps. The strapping is intact, with this again secured through five clasps. “Roy” and “1” have been written over the front of the mask in a few spots, with the date of “22 Janvier 1960” written over the reverse. “M Roy” has also been handwritten over the strap. With wear to the metal, especially over the mouth hole, the mask displays well, with some additional wear to the pads from use.
