Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified for the 1972-74 NHL Goal Puck Program could be obtained by mail with the buyer's choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that divulged which team-goal said puck accounted for. We have a quartet of pucks from the first year of the program in 1972-73, with each used to score a goal for the Montreal Canadiens. The first was used by Claude Larose to score the Canadiens 11th goal of the season vs the Rangers, on Oct 14th 1972. The second served as Montreal’s 140th goal of the season, scored on Dec 26th 1972 by Murray Wilson vs the St Louis Blues, while the third was used by Jimmy Roberts to score in a Jan 21st contest in 1973 vs Atlanta. Finally, we have a puck used by Peter Mahovlich to score the Canadiens 313th goal of the season vs Chicago, on March 25th 1973.
The Larose goal served as his 2nd of the season, with the Habs winning the match 6-1. Both the Habs logo and Goal Puck Program label are dark and show heavy wear, with some paper loss over the Goal Puck Program Label. There are also a few blemishes along the side of the puck. The Wilson goal served as his 7th of the season, with the Habs taking home the victory 4-1. The Goal Puck Program label and Blues logo both show wear and are quite dark, with a few small edge gouges also present. Next, the Roberts goal was his 9th of the season, with Montreal taking home the victory, 3-2. This example has a generic Goal Puck Program label with the inventory number of “MC-1-193” handwritten, along with the date. The label shows toning and wear, with the Flames logo dark with a few blemishes. There is also a white film over the puck in spots. Finally, Mahovlich had 2 goals and an assist in the game, with the Black Hawks winning 6-5. The puck shows light wear including toning to the Goal Puck Program label along with a few small white blemishes, with the puck’s oils coming to the surface slightly.
