Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Banking on one of the most famous personalities in the US during the time, the Curtiss Candy Company refashioned their Kandy Kake bar around 1920 and renamed it “Baby Ruth”, and despite the name being similar to the noteworthy slugger, the company always maintained that the confection was named after President Grover Cleveland's daughter, Ruth Cleveland. We have a wonderful collection of vintage Curtiss Baby Ruth items, including a pair of 24-count candy bar boxes with a high-grade example, a pair of change holders, a porcelain advertising tape dispenser, and best of all, a large counter tray display. Ideal for display with wonderful period graphics, this collection would take endless time to duplicate.
The 24-count candy bar boxes are both 9 ¼” x 7 ¼” x 2 ½”, with wonderful graphics and colours, one box is in beautiful condition with just light to moderate wear including some minor colour loss along the top edges, with heavier wear including a bit of paper loss to the second box, along with a split corner. The porcelain advertising tape dispenser is 10 ½” x 3” x 2” and made of solid porcelain, with Ruth advertising labels on all four corners. There are a few cracks to the porcelain and minor discolouration, with wear to a pair of the labels. Next, the change holders are both approx 8” x 6”, with glass over metal on the left, set in a metal bracket, with a peppermint gum advertising dispenser on right. Both are intact and show moderate to heavier wear including paint and surface loss over the metal components, with the advertising differing slightly on each. Lastly, the counter tray is 16” x 9” x 10”, with a wooden base with Art Deco metal accents, with an oval glass cover and Curtiss baby Ruth advertising sticker. Exhibiting moderate wear from use with some of the added metal strips loose, there is also wear around the label from it possibly being changed at some point. A small drawer is also situated over the reverse, with small evenly-spaced slots.
