Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019

O’Brien Trophy winners for their status as first-place finishers in the Canadian Division at the close of the 1930-31 NHL season, the Montreal Canadiens would defeat the Black Hawks in the Stanley Cup final, with team scoring leader Howie Morenz plotting the final goal in Game 7 to put the nail in the coffin for Chicago. From his first of back-to-back Hart Memorial Trophy-winning seasons as the NHL’s premier player in 1930-31, we have an especially rare Morenz picture that has been signed and dated by the iconic superstar. At 8” x 10” and on thin stock, the legend is pictured in full uniform, signing just below his image with a beautiful flowing fountain pen specimen, dated “Mar. 20/31”. This date is important, as the image was signed just before Montreal played their first playoff game vs Boston on March 24th, on route to their second-consecutive Stanley Cup championship.
The signature displays well and remains fairly bold, with the picture itself in low grade, with toning, edge tears, creasing and a few faint stains. The upper left and bottom right edges have also been folded slightly, with a pair of horizontal fold lines along with a single vertical example. There are a couple pinholes centered along the top, with “16087” handwritten over the reverse. Howie Morenz items in general are rare, with highly desirable signed images almost non-existent.
