New York diamond stars Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays are the keys to Bowman's 252-card baseball card effort of 1952, with Willie's second-year card here slabbed by PSA and graded EX 5. The write-up on the back informs that Mays "entered the Army on May 29, 1952" and the result was that the 1951 National League rookie-of-the-year missed most of the '52 campaign and all of 1953. Once back at the Polo Grounds, Mays renewed a career that would see him go on to win two N.L. MVP awards, appear in 24 MLB All-Star Games (a record, shared with Aaron and Musial), smack 660 home runs and win 12 Gold Glove Awards (after 1957 when the award was introduced). Possibly the finest five-tool player ever and considered by many as the greatest all-around offensive baseball player, Mays placed second in 1999 on The Sporting News' List of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players. The Say Hey Kid awaits your collection.
We should note some residue along with a few scratches over both the front and reverse of the PSA holder.
