Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
One of the premier display pieces - and the only tobacco tin from the earlier part of the 20th century to feature hockey graphics, we have a “Puck” tobacco tin along with an extremely rare Puck box label, with this ideal displayable combo accompanied by a telegram sent by Bruins guru Art Ross. The 3 ¼” tin feature’s wonderful period graphics on each side, with all four lithographed colors remaining bright and vibrant, much bolder than usually encountered on surviving examples. Remnants of the tax stamp remain on each side, with a discernible “1915” tax date, with the tin retaining its circular continuity. The lid is gone, with this easily rectified by finding a donor lid from a similarly-sized period tin, with examples plentiful. The 3” x 3 ½” box label with slightly-differing graphics is affixed to a 3 ¼” x 5 ¼” box segment.
The tin exhibits minor wear to the surface, with the underside fairly clean. The interior has a covering of surface rust, with no unsightly wear or damage. The box label shows wear with a few tears and creases, with a bit of loss over the bottom right corner. The Art Ross telegram is 6 ½” x 8” and dated “Dec 12 1932”, with content related to a pair of players associated with the “Beavers” hockey team, with toning, punched holes, an edge tear, fold lines and a few wrinkles all visible.
