Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Rarely utilized for advertising - especially south of the border, hockey imagery used to promote goods and services was a freak occurrence, with the function of selling items featuring sporting graphics dominated by baseball. We have a wonderful archive collection from the Bloomington Packaging Company ranging from the 1930s to 1960s and featuring hockey-themed advertising, including documents and original art work. Featuring the company’s Winterlein lard with winter scene and generic hockey player, we have an original metal section from a 50-pound drum, an original photo plate used for printing, 2 black and white proof copies, original artwork and four proofs for the 4-pound can labels including one mounted to board. There are also an additional nine documents all referring specifically to the production of the artwork.
The original metal drum advertising section is approx 11” x 15”, and done in blue tones, with general wear along with the two bottom corners trimmed. The photo plate is for the 50-pound drum label and is 17 ½” x 22” and shows wear from use, with proof marks visible. The original artwork is also for the 50-pound drum label, and is 15 ½” x 16 ½”, with a few notations and printers marks. The two large proofs remain in black and white, with one having handwritten notations. Next, the three smaller 4-pound can label proofs are 8 ½” x 20”, with notations from the company, with two having a “1953” date. The artwork mounted to board for the 4-pound can label proofs is 9 ½” x 22”, with notations and printers marks, along with some toning. Lastly, the accompanying documents range from 1939 to 1966, with just general handling wear present.
