Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Donned in the late-1970s while playing for the Aurora Tigers in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, we have a neat Ernie Higgins-style mask, made and worn by netminder and collector Gary Smith. Not to be confused with the longtime NHL netminder bearing the same name, Smith played a single season with Aurora in 1979-80, followed up by time spent with the Soo Indians. Off-white in colour with a black and teal chevron pattern over the nose and mouth section, a whimsical Tasmanian devil has been added over the forehead (this was done after his junior playing days were finished), with no inner padding or strapping intact. A few marks are present including over the right side and near the left eye socket, with overpaint visible in spots along with some crazing to the finish/surface.
