With renovations taking place at the aging Montreal Forum in the fall of 1968, The Canadiens began the season on an 8-game road trip. On the fourth game of this extended road stint on Oct 20th vs Detroit, superstar Jean Beliveau plotted both his 500th and 501st career goals (regular season and playoffs). We have the very stick Le Gros Bill employed to achieve the milestone, accompanied by a ticket stub from the contest. A CCM Custom Pro with “Beliveau” and “4” over the upper shaft, a stamp from supplier McNiece’s graces the top side, with black tape over the blade and white over the knob. A lengthy handwritten notation over the upper shaft explains the sticks history, including the “Oct 20 1968” date along with “His 500 + 501 goal” and “Mont 4 Red Wings 2”. We should note as a point of reference, that Classic Auctions sold Beliveau’s 500th goal stick (regular season goals) from the 1970-71 season in 2005, with the hammer price just north of $15,000.00.
Beliveau had 498 goals before the start of 1968-69 season (430 reg. season goals + 68 playoffs goals), he then scored a goal in the Oct. 16th game vs the Blues bringing his total to 499, and scored twice and added an assist in the October 20th 1968 game vs the Red Wings which were goals 500 & 501. With the club away from the Forum for an extended period and short on supplies, the stick had the original black tape removed (the remnants of the placement of the original strand at one end is visible), with white added over the toe section to rectify a crack, with the stick then retaped, with black tape again added in Jean’s style for his continued use of the stick. The striping accent remains intact, with numerous puck marks over the heel section, with some chipping and minor loss along the untapped underside section of the blade. A few marks are also visible over the shaft, with a bit of blue paint transfer along the underside, near the knob. The 1 ½” x 5” Olympia ticket stub remains complete and has been hole-punched thrice for admission, with the date listed along with the original $6.00 purchase price. Just light handling wear is exhibited, with the ticket displaying especially well.
