Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018

A member of both the NHL’s 1000-point club along with the prestigious Hall of Fame, Joe Mullen was the very first American-born player to eclipse the 500-goal plateau. The NYC native was also the recipient of a pair of Lady Byng Trophies, in 1987 and 1989. Originating from the Stanley Cup-championship season of 1990-91, we have a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey worn by Joe Mullen. Maska Ultrafil tagging including handwritten “7” and faded “52” sizing appears along the collar, with CCM and NHL crests over the reverse bottom hem. Styled with an attractive embroidered skating penguin team crest, the solid white v-neck has been accented with dual-colour tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers, with the important 1990 NHL All-Star game patch residing over the left shoulder.
Evidence of a former nameplate is visible, most likely that of Rod Buskas, with Mullen wearing the number 22 jersey in the pre-season, changing to number 7 once Buskas was claimed off waiwers by the LA Kings on October 1st 1990. It should be further noted that the jersey was worn in the earlier part of the 1990-91 season. The 1990 All-Star Game was held in Pittsburgh, with the club continuing to wear the All-Star patch into the 1990-91 season until complaints to league officials from the 1991 host, the Chicago Black Hawks, forced the garments into early retirement. A few dark marks are visible over the lower front including a large stick mark near the team crest, with additional marks over each sleeve. There are also faint board burns over and near each elbow section, with the team crest remaining clean and bright.
