Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019

Although with almost standard condition issues originating at the O-Pee-Chee factory back in the day, crisp, clean cards abound in these two sets, with the majority of star and rookie cards pulled from nine-pocket pages appearing as though they were recently pulled from packs! Less-than-perfect centering, intermittent wax/gum stains and print dots far outnumber touched/dinged corners, with NM+ or NM-MT looking to be the average of both groups. A 1973-74 ensemble stars Robinson (NM-MT (OC)), Barber, O’Reilly and Schultz RCs, as well as star cards led by Orr, with centering not perfect, while notable exceptions are Billy Smith RC (EX+ (OC)) and Lafleur (EX-MT (OC)((ST)). Unmarked checklists have issues, with details on our website, where ’77-78 checklists are also described. Considerable wax staining affects the Bryan Trottier second-year card, with again centering to be critiqued with star and rookie cards from ’77-78. NM-MT, NM-MT+ and Mint cards are however to be discovered.
Checklists from ’73-74 include #116 (off-centered with a long vertical yellow print line on the front and a wax/gum stain on the back), #129 (miscut and slightly warped) and #263 (edge notches and VG-EX). Toning affects the upper part of checklist #68 from ’77-78, with checklist #381 being the (error) version with “Topps” appearing on the front. One final note concerns the backs of the ’73-74 set. Grey backs dominate Series 1 cards with all but 33 being that variety, but then just 17 “greys” showing up in the 2nd Series.
