Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Immortalized – along with Charlie Gardiner, Georges Vezina and Bill Barilko – as one of hockey’s most tragic casualties, Howie Morenz thrilled spectators throughout his 14 seasons, with his number “7” retired at the time of his passing a first for the sport. We have an important collection of Morenz images totaling 7, along with a desirable iron-transfer issued after his passing. Included, we have three photos that feature photographer stamps over the reverse along with cropping lines, including a full-body pose in uniform (6 ½” x 8 ½”) with the photo stamped “Turofsky” over the reverse, a well known image (8” x 10”) with a “May 54” pencil date and an image of Boom Boom Geoffrion (son in law) with Morenz’s daughter, with a David Bier stamp over the reverse. Additional images include one as a Black Hawk (8” x 10”), and one showing Howie’s dressing room stall as Aurel Joliat and Cecil Hart look on (8” x 10”).
The additional images within the group not previously mentioned include a portrait image in Habs uniform (8” x 10”), with a “Public Archives of Canada” stamp over the reverse with notations, along with a colour glossy image (6 ¼” x 10”) with “Brian McFarlanes Hockey Museum – Pyramid Place” handwritten over the reverse. The Turofsky photo has a stamp over the reverse from New Liberty photo in Montreal, with the company’s stamp also over the “May 54” and Geoffrion/Morenz photos as well. As one would imagine, condition varies, with some corner/surface wear and minor creasing present to the images with stamps over their reverse. It should also be noted that the image of Morenz in his Black Hawks uniform has been taped to cardboard, with a typed notation over the reverse along with “Bill Galloway Photo Collection”. Lastly, the 3” x 7” iron-on transfer has been glued to a scrapbook page (3 ½” x 8”), and it exhibits some wrinkling and moderate wear.
