Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
The “Winged Wheel” rides high with pride on the lid of this mid-1960s Tiffany & Co sterling silver cigarette case (3” X 4 ½”), with a raised, enamel-painted Detroit Red Wings logo along with “N.H.L. Champions 1964-65” engraved below. Likely presented to Marguerite Norris, the daughter of Norris clan patriarch Bruce Sr., who served as team president following her father’s death from 1952 to 1955, “Tiffany & Co” is stamped in tiny letters on the inside lower edge, with a gilded interior also utilized. “Sterling” along with a hallmark are also stamped on the thin, gold-colored cigarette holder. Originally obtained from a member of the Norris family, this high-quality keepsake will augment any vintage Detroit Red Wings collection admirably.
Tarnishing, oxidation and surface wear is present, along with a few scratches and some minor scuffing. The interior has a few minor blemishes to the surface as well.
The first female executive in league history, Norris led the Red Wings to three straight regular season titles during her brief tenure and became the first woman to have her name inscribed on the Stanley Cup, when Detroit won back-to-back championships in 1954 and ’55.
