With over a quarter-century of service as the NHL’s first president, Frank Calder’s legacy lives on in the Calder Memorial Trophy awarded to the league’s top rookie each season. This lot contains a typed letter on NHL letterhead that’s been signed by the Hall of Fame builder. At roughly 8” x 10” (exposed), the cream-coloured document features correspondence addressed to a Mr. Dion regarding “Instructions to referees”. Dated Nov 4th 1929 and on official NHL stationary, Calder has signed beneath the typed text in period fountain pen, and the signature is exemplary. The single page remains in excellent condition with expected fold lines present, double-matted and framed to full dimensions of roughly 16” x 18”.
There is also a small pin/staple hole worth mentioning in the upper left. We should also note that the signed letter has Mr. Calder’s correspondence info within the top left corner. Deceased in 1943, the inaugural NHL president was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 1947.
