Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
Receiving their moniker while sponsored by the Dunlop Rubber Company, the Whitby Dunlops were a senior club that competed in the OHA Senior A League from 1954 to 1960, with their crowning achievement occurring in 1958, winning the World Championships while representing Canada. Originating from a homecoming celebration for the Dunlops shortly after their victory, we have a large “Welcome Home Whitby Dunlops” street banner. At approx. 27 ½” x 94” (at the widest points) and constructed from thin canvas and linen, the central portion contains faded/weathered blue graphics encompassed by British Union Jack and Canadian Red Ensign flags. The sides feature yellow and black linen sections that taper in size, with grommets affixed throughout to facilitate mounting. A pertinent document will accompany.
As mentioned, the graphics are heavily faded but easily readable, with just honest wear present commensurate from both the banners age and former use. A number of strings are also attached. Shown on this listing is a photo showing Shelley Moore of Whitby sitting in front of the post office at Brock and Dundas Streets with a Whitby Dunlops street banner covering her. The banner reads, "Welcome Home Whitby Dunlops". She is also wearing a cap that reads, "Go Dunnies Go". This photograph was taken after the Whitby Dunlops homecoming celebrations in 1958 when they returned from the World Ice Hockey Championships in Oslo, Norway. Shelley Moore was born on 21 May 1957.
