Securing the premier draft spot over extremely talented superstar and fellow French-Canadian Marcel Dionne, Guy Lafleur would lead the Quebec Remparts to a Memorial Cup championship before making his NHL debut in the same sweater worn by his idol, Jean Beliveau. The Flower would net an impressive 64 points during his inaugural NHL campaign in 1971-72, before peeking to a career high 136, in 1976-77. Worn while a current Stanley Cup champion, this signed Montreal Canadiens’ jersey saw action with Lafleur in just his third NHL season, in 1973-74, and it’s been photo-matched!
This scarce style of Maska jerseys were worn by the Habs circa 1973-74. A label graces the collar, with the vintage tie-neck jersey measuring-out to roughly a size 44 – consistent with sizing worn by Lafleur during the era. Featuring the iconic CH team crest fully administered in layered red, white and blue tackle twill, Guy’s famous “10” appears over the sleeves and verso. We should note that the sleeve and verso numbers differ in material, with the reverse numbers appearing to be a softer and more pliable fabric than the tackle twill sleeve numbers, with added reinforced threading to the top of the reverse numbers, with this especially visible within the interior of the jersey. The sleeves have also been custom shortened (minor fraying) and the fight strap has been cut-out and removed (leaving a hole in the material), and it is unknown if these alterations were done by/for Lafleur, or at a later date. Guy has signed along the top of the reverse “0” in blue marker, with the signature exhibiting some minor fading. Dispelling any myths of mere superstar status, Guy Lafeur’s supremacy as the all-time points leader of the most dominant hockey team in history is, and will always remain, unrivaled.
Exhibiting heavy game-use while on the back of one of the game’s greatest, a number of dark marks are visible over the lower front, with a bit of minor puckering to the team crest. Additional marks, scuffs and material pulls reside over each sleeve, with this repeated over the lower reverse. Team repairs – those consistent for Canadiens’ jerseys of the era – are present, with 3 over the front, and single examples over the reverse and each sleeve. Regarding the aforementioned photo-match, an included numeric image of Lafleur in a studio pose shows; perfect placement of the team crest, the collar's reinforcement stitching sewn at an angle on its lower edge and its placement in correlation with the team crest; the matching pattern of the seam along the left shoulder area and going onto the left sleeve, particularly the amount of material on the lower portion of the seam above the threading near the collar and its variations throughout the seam; to details on the numbers on the left sleeve, particularly to the small loose blue thread on the top right corner of the "1", the top edge of the right corner of the footed "1" on the bottom cut at an angle/not straight, the three small loose blue threads on the interior upper edge of the "0" and their placement. Also, Lafleur's 1974-75 O-Pee-Chee First Team All-Stars hockey card shows proper placement of the number "0" over the reverse and number "10" on the right sleeve.
