Brilliant Bobby Orr rookie year Northland Custom Pro game-issued stick signed in vintage ballpoint ink along the length of the shaft by 21 of his bench mates from his first NHL season. The stick, with the three back accent stripes intact, has an “ORR” name stamp and a fiberglass-reinforced blade with a slight left curve. Signers include staffers Harry Sinden and Milt Schmit with Bernie Parent, Wayne Connelly, Nick Beverley, Joe Watson, Ed Westfall, Don Awrey, Tom Williams, John Bucyk, Ron Stewart, Bob Woytowich and Ed Johnson. Another eight that are difficult to make out. While the Parent, Bucyk and Sinden sigs are quite dark, others have faded away over time and can no longer be read. The stick itself is in outstanding excellent-plus condition with a slight chip along the edge near the handle.
This important early Orr game stick was dated comparing the seasons played by the signers. Nick Beverly appeared in two games in 1966-67 only and did not return to the Bruins until 1969-70. Ron Stewart was with the team only in 1965-66 and 1966-67, as was HOF goalie Bernie Parent, while Wayne Connelly was a Bruin in 63-64 and did not return until 1966-67 before moving on the following season to Minnesota. The math points to the 1966-67 season, Orr’s first in the NHL, as the only time this particular group was on the same bench at the same time!
