Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
While it’s hard for any modern hockey adherent to picture netminders roaming the crease bare-faced, that was entirely the case for the majority of the sport’s existence. Originating from the formative days of head gear protection, we have a rare circa late-1950s Louch plexiglass goalie mask. Advertised as "18-oz" in the included 8 ½” x 11” instruction/care sheet, the mask feature’s the original red leather strapping and matching-leather covered chin padding, along with the chin hook designed to secure the now-lost neck strap. Tape has been added along each side where the straps are affixed to the mask, with a number of scratches and marks to the mask’s surface present. With this style mask used by both Terry Sawchuk and Johnny Bower in practices, the care/instruction sheet mentions “Now compulsory practice mask for Red Wings Hockey Association”.
We should note that the accompanying care/instruction sheet exhibits fold lines and toning, with a number of creases also present.
