Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018

The first defenceman throughout a century of NHL existence to reach the improbable 1500 career-points plateau, Paul Coffey accomplished the milestone feat during his second-last season while with Carolina, on Dec 23rd 1999. We have the Hurricanes jersey attributed to his 1500th career point, and it’s been photo-matched to a late October game (not the 1500th point game). CCM labeling with handwritten “77” and “1500” along with a size “52” fly tag are affixed to the collar, with embroidered CCM and NHL crests over the reverse bottom hem. Featuring a wonderful tackle twill Canes team crest with embroidered detailing, the solid red V-neck has been accented with sleeve and verso numbers in matching material. Alternate crests also grace the shoulders along with a “3” patch over the left to honour Steve Chiasson, with Raleigh inaugural season and NHL 2000 crests just above the right breast. A signed LOA from Paul Coffey will accompany this historically important specimen.
A few dark marks are present over the team crest and lower front, with additional examples over each sleeve. A few faint board burns are also visible. Getty Image #492112 from Oct 20th 1999 has been matched to the small black mark on the top of the team's crest, to a pair of loose strings on the top of the Chiasson patch and to a white thread on the first "7" of "77" over the left sleeve. We should also note that Getty Image #114928969 (undated) mentions Coffey’s 1500th point and shows the black mark on the right elbow (within in white band) in the same area as this jersey, but the photo is not high resolution enough to call a definitive photo-match. Coffey was only the 8th player to reach the 1500 point plateau, and is currently 13th all-time with 1531 points.
