Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
A man of milestones, Wayne Gretzky holds numerous NHL scoring records, with his 2,857 career points arguably his most impressive. We have a neat collection of Great One items that celebrate both his surpassing of Gordie Howe atop the all-time points list, as well as his record goal-scoring season of 1981-82 that witnessed Wayne annihilate Phil Esposito’s record 76 goal-season of 1970-71. First, we have a limited-edition signed puck issued to commemorate Wayne’s 1851st point. A fotoball issue with a Kings logo on one side and full colour picture with stats on the other, the limited-edition number of “174/1851” has been handwritten beneath Gretzky’s image, with the puck in beautiful condition. Wayne has signed next to his image in black marker, and the signature is flawless. A 5” x 5” x 6” plastic display case with affixed name plaque with “1851 Limited Edition” is included for displaying the slug, with a “frosted” decal added. Next, we have a framed first day cover commemorating Wayne’s historic 1982 match against the Sabres, where he plotted his 77th, 78th, and 79th goals of the season to surpass Espo’s record 76. This example has been signed by Wayne in ballpoint over the photo insert section, with a card added that states 1500 were produced, with this version that includes a coloured Gretzky silk limited to 100 examples, with this display hand-numbered 92 of 100. The signature displays well, with no issues for the silk or cover, framed to full dimensions of roughly 9” x 9 ½”. A COA will accompany for the signed puck, with a second COA for the first day cover along the back of the frame.
