Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018

Phil Esposito, the man who would soon start establishing lofty single-season goal and point-scoring records that were only broken when Wayne Gretzky came along, is pictured smiling here on his coveted 1965-66 Topps rookie card, the write-up on the back of card #116 describing the legend-in-the-making as a “big, good-natured guy”. PSA deemed this example worthy of NM 7 recognition, with the naked eye spotting two white specs in the blue background and light corner touches. Espo’s sophomore season stats of 23 goals and 55 points appear on the reverse, with Phil then blossoming following a trade to Boston where he put up seasons of 35, 49, 43, 76, 66, 55, 68 and 61 goals – what a scoring machine! The dominant center helped the Bruins to two Stanley Cup titles and finished with 717 regular season goals, helping to render his RC the key card in Topps’ ’65-66 set.
