Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
Highly desirable style used by Wayne Gretzky at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, with this example featuring a now-faded signature where the blade meets the shaft. Easton Silver Tip model stick with Gretzky factory graphics including facsimile signature “Gretzky” has been stamped onto the inserted wood blade with Wayne’s familiar “Jack the Gripper” over the handle. The knob is coded with “WC8” in marker, added by the trainers and the blade is taped in bulldog wrap with aged baby powder. Game-use includes stick marks on the shaft with a slight gouge and more marks on the blade tape. This stick has been specially customized with an additional code written on the butt end and a small hologram sticker added by our consignor.
The first World Cup of Hockey (WCH) or 1996 World Cup of Hockey, played from August 26th through September 14th, 1996, replaced the Canada Cup as one of the premier championships for professional ice hockey. Wayne would score 7 points including 3 goals during his 8 games at the 1996 tournament. Canada would bow out to USA in the three-game final series, taking second place overall.
