Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
The “front man” for Bill Dwyer’s secretly owned Pittsburgh Pirates NHL hockey club, boxer Benny Leonard acted as the sole proprietor throughout the team’s final two seasons, in 1928-29 and 1929-30. We have a Pirates scrapbook that once belonged to the speedy lightweight, and it’s loaded with period newspaper clippings contemporary to his ownership. Excessively large at 20” x 25”, over 2 dozen substantial pages are covered back-to-back with clippings that all feature the Pirates, along with a small sampling relating to Leonard’s boxing career. The main highlight within the tome is a roughly 7” x 10” single page fold-over program for a 1928-29 contest between the Pirates and NY Rangers at MSG. Just the back page has been glued down, with the interior contents viewable.
Leather plates have been added to the cover, with “Pittsburgh Professional Hockey Club” and “Owned by Benny Leonard” in gold lettering. The majority of the pages are brittle and need to be handled with care, with spots noticeable that once held additional clippings. Wear is also present along the outer spine, with “Property of Jacqueline S. Leonard” handwritten in ballpoint on the back of the front cover.
