CFL great Ron Lancaster played in the Grey Cup five times with Saskatchewan and led the Roughriders to their first title in 1966. Passed over by NFL scouts, the five-foot-five Pennsylvanian quarterbacked a run of 14 straight playoff appearances during his 16 seasons with Saskatchewan from 1963-78. Lancaster’s circa 1970 Roughriders game-worn jersey is the first of his gamers we have handled and vintage jerseys from star players of that era are rarely seen. Lancaster’s retired No. 23 in heat-screened green vinyl is on the front, back and both sleeves of this rare find with its original Champion size 42 tagging on the left front tail. There is a team repair on the left sleeve and a solid green mark on the right front below the shoulder seam, as well as light red stains around the front numbers.
Lancaster came into his own when he was traded to Saskatchewan after teaming up with Russ Jackson to give the Ottawa Rough Riders a pair of future Canadian Football Hall of Fame pivots from 1960-62. The two former teammates squared off in the 1966 Grey Cup, and Lancaster threw three touchdown passes to outgun Jackson in the Roughriders’ 29-14 win over Ottawa at Vancouver’s Empire Stadium.
Lancaster threw for 50,535 passing yards and 333 touchdowns over the course of his CFL career with Ottawa and Saskatchewan from 1960-78.
