Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
One of the truly important and historic clubs from early in the 20th century, the Portage Lake Hockey Team’s existence was extremely short, playing until just 1906-07 out of Houghton Michigan. The champion of the IHL in 1905-06, the club is recognized as one of the first professional squads ever iced. We have an exceptional, original composite photo of the 1905-06 team, highlighted by early superstar and iconic legend Fred “Cyclone” Taylor. At roughly 14” x 17” and affixed to its original mount at full dimensions of 18” x 21 ¾”, cameos of team members are pictured, along with the Portage Lake arena in Houghton. Taylor is pictured along the bottom left, with fellow HOFers Hern, Hall and Bruce Stuart. Produced by photographer A.W. Buck, their monogram and address appear along the bottom right.
The image remains fairly clean, with some toning and spotting, along with some surface wear that includes a small break to the surface. The mount itself suffers from additional wear, with staining and spotting present along with the upper and lower right corners clipped/rounded. Despite the obvious flaws, the photo displays beautifully, and would look stunning set in an attractive frame.
