Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
A superb offering, here is an original studio team photo of the 1903 Stanley Cup champion Montreal Amateur Athletic Association hockey club. A decade after they became the original holders of the Cup in 1893, the MAAA team was back on top of the hockey world as defending Cup champions. Nicknamed "The Little Men of Iron" for their impenetrable defence, they regained the Cup in March of 1902 with a 2-1 challenge series win in Winnipeg. The MAAA defended its title in another 2-1 series win over Winnipeg in February 1903. At 10 ½” x 14 ½”, the Swan Studio print is mounted on its original grey matte beneath an affixed image of the original Stanley Cup. A banner along the bottom of the 22" x 28" matte lists the team's name and its players, including the legendary Tommy Phillips, who appears seated in front at the far left of the studio photo. Fellow Hall-of-Famers Dickie Boon, Jimmy Gardner and Jack Marshall are also pictured.
The photo exhibits remarkable clarity, with the bottom corners loose, but the photo remains firmly attached above. There is some warping to the name banner beneath, with the affixed Stanley Cup also currently loose. Edge wear and toning is present on the matte itself, with some staining on the right hand side along with the tips of the upper left and lower right corners clipped. The reverse also shows heavy staining.
