Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017

What a scene it was at Olympic Stadium when Rusty Staub returned to Montreal in the summer of 1979! The Expos’ biggest star through their first three seasons, Le Grand Orange was given a hero’s welcome by a Big O crowd of 59,260 on July 27 after he was re-acquired for the NL East pennant race. A big, bold blue marker “Rusty Staub, Le Grand Orange” autograph sits above the Expos logo decal on the front of his beautifully battle-scarred batting helmet. “STAUB” is spelled out on a piece of black embossing tape on the tip of the underside of the bill. According to the listing of the original sale, this awesome Staub 1979 game-worn Expos batting helmet came directly from a source within the team.
The front of the bill and back of Staub’s left-handed batter’s helmet each have a small white “6” decal. Rusty wore No. 6 during his second go-round in Montreal because future HOFer Andre Dawson had already established his claim to the No. 10 Staub made famous during his first stint with Montreal from 1969-71. The Expos retired No. 10 twice, once each in honor of both Staub and Dawson.
Size 7 1/8 American Baseball Cap company label is applied to the top of the inside of the helmet, which retains its original padding. The ABC logo remains on the back of the helmet.
