The three patches on Russian forward Andrei Kovalenko’s 1999-2000 Carolina Hurricanes game-worn jersey evoke a range of emotions. The right breast displays the “1999-2000 Raleigh Arena Inaugural Season” patch sewn above the “NHL 2000” patch, the latter worn by every team in the league that season. While those patches were celebratory by nature, the number “3” patch sewn on the left shoulder below the Hurricanes alternate logo patch commemorates Carolina defenseman Steve Chiasson, who was killed in a road accident. Kovalenko’s gamer has his number “51” handwritten in black marker on the CCM flag tag in the back of the neck, which has a size 54 flag tag to its left. Black marks all over the front tail attest to the clutch-and-grab defensive tactics employed by opponents during that era. More game wear shows in black marks on the rear tail and on the bottom of the white twill of the “5” in the double-twill white and black No. 51 sewn on the back. More black marks and board burns on the sleeves, with unrepaired burn holes on the right sleeve and a few small reddish-brown stains on the white stripe of the left sleeve.
