Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
On the eve of their third Stanley Cup championship in 1940, the New York Rangers would place second overall in the 1938-39 campaign, going seven games in the semifinals with the eventual Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins. We have a team-signed sheet from this very season, signed by 17 including 7 deceased HOFers. At 8 ½” x 11”, the cream-coloured Rangers letterhead features the MSG Corporation address with two columns of signatures, with “1938-39 NY Rangers” handwritten above. Completely fashioned in fountain pen, the 7 deceased HOFers who have signed are Smith, Colville, Hextall, Pratt, Coulter, Lynn Patrick and Lester Patrick.
The remaining 10 signatures have been penned by Dillon, Watson, Shibicky, Heller, Hiller, Molyneaux, Kerr, Colville, Muzz Patrick and trainer Harry Westerby. The signatures all display beautifully, with the examples from Smith, Coulter, and Lester Patrick exemplary, ranking with some of the best we’ve seen from these individuals. The sheet itself exhibits toning along with expected fold lines with some light tape and glue residue on verso, most likely from a former scrapbook mounting.
