Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
With three games settled in overtime including the Cup-clinching sixth game, the 1940 Stanley Cup Final witnessed the then-consecutive finalist Toronto Maple Leafs taking on Broadway’s best, in the form of the New York Rangers. Originating from an individual who ventured to Toronto from NYC to cheer on their hometown heroes, in this lot we have a program from the final game of the series on April 13th that witnessed the Blueshirts being awarded their third Stanley Cup in franchise history, along with a team signed envelope that contains 23 signatures with 9 deceased HOFers! There is also a second sheet with additional autographs, along with the original charter airfare receipt and envelope. The HOFers who graciously signed are Boucher, Hextall, Colville, Smith, Pratt, Coulter and John Reed Kilpatrick, along with both Lester and Lynn Patrick.
The program is roughly 6 ¾” x 10”, and it remains supple and fully intact including the important center line-up page, with just regular handling wear present. The team-signed envelope hasn’t fared as well, with material loss and moderate toning. All signatures have been scripted in pencil (except one), and included with the previously mentioned HOFers, we have Phil Watson, Alex Shibicky, Dutch Hiller, James Macdonald, Mac Colville, Otto Heller, Alfy Pike, Murray Patrick, Butch Keeling, Bert Lee (Rangers broadcaster), goaltender Davie Kerr and 3 others. The signatures themselves remain bold, especially the Lester Patrick example. The second signed sheet is a fold-over affair on monogrammed stationary, with 7 pencil signatures including Turk Broda and Gord Drillon, along with staff from American Airlines. Lastly, the ticket receipt and envelope both remain in excellent condition.
