Early Spalding volumes relating to hockey are some of the most desirable and hard to locate publications for collectors. In this lot we have an impressive group of Spalding Ice Hockey guides totaling 7, including a scarce example from 1901 that includes ice polo. Each volume contains pertinent hockey information regarding the sport’s history, rules and tactics, along with images of the prominent teams of the day. Examples present include the aforementioned 1901 copy, along with editions from 1912, 1913, 1914, 1916-17, 1921 and 1924. There are also three Splading NCAA hockey rules guides from 1928-29, 1936-37 and 1937-38. As a point of reference, we previously sold an inferior copy of the 1901 Ice Hockey and Ice Polo Guide in 2009 for $528.00. Rounding out the lot we have Spalding’s “How To Play Hockey” guide from 1907, a Spalding “Official Rules For Ice Hockey” guide from 1929, and lastly, the “National Hockey and Winter Sport Guide” from 1941 edited by James Hendy. Most guides show moderate wear, with creasing, toning along with surface and spine wear/damage. The 1901 Ice Hockey and Ice Polo Guide remains in pleasing condition, with normal handling wear and toning, along with some creasing and a surface tear on the bottom left near the spine. The following guides also show excessive wear/damage. 1) 1912 guide. Coverless, the spine has been reinforced with clear tape. There is also damage to the back cover along with pencil/pen notations. 2) 1913 guide. Tape has been used to reinforce the cover, with the staples exhibiting heavy rust, with damage and loss to the back cover. 3) 1916-17 guide. Cover remains loose but attached, with considerable spine damage including the use of clear tape. The interior shows heavy toning. 4) 1921 guide. Coverless, the first and last pages have tears along with heavy toning to the interior. 5) 1924 guide. Front and back covers are detached, with only the front present.
