A Stanley Cup winner with Montreal in 1986, goaltender Steve Penney was then traded to Winnipeg for Brian Hayward, playing only 15 games in the River City before moving onto a final season in the AHL in 1987-88. This lot contains a neat collection of 7 game-worn items from his time both in Winnipeg, and in his home province of Quebec with the Canadiens. We have his Cooper SK 600 helmet with full mask, his Jofa Audax blocker, Cooper trapper and Micron goalie skates. We also have Penney’s CCM Supra pants with Jets patch along with his well-used and heavily soiled Audax chest and arm protector. Lastly, we have the Sainte-Foy native’s well-used Jofa goal pads. A signed LOA from Steve Penney will accompany this lot.
The breakdown for each of the offered game-used Steve Penney items is as follows. 1) Cooper helmet. An SK 600 model in solid blue, this example features “37” on back, with the mask, throat guard, padding and strapping all present. Nice use is shown, with multiple scratches and nicks along with a crack along the front. There is also some rusting to the screws and soiling to the interior padding. This item could have been used with either the Jets or Habs, but most likely Winnipeg, as Penney’s Montreal examples had Canadiens decals. 2) Jofa blocker. A solid blue vinyl face, a Jofa cloth patch sits on the wrist protector, with “Audax” stenciled on the back side above the fingers. Nice use is shown, with toning to the tan leather. This would have been used while with the Canadiens. 3) Cooper trapper. Solid black with a tan leather pocket, all of the lace-work seems to be intact, with “Cooper” screened-on the knuckle protector. Nice-use is shown, with wear heavy to the leather in a few spots. This would have been used while with the Canadiens. 4) Micron goal skates. Large in size with ICM molded blades, the inner lining has “L” on the left and “R” on the right handwritten in marker. Both show considerable use, with scratches, marks and abrasions present along with some rusting to the blades. These could have been worn with either the Jets or Canadiens. 5) CCM pants. Supra models in Jets blue white and red, “Supra” is embroidered on one leg with a Jets patch along with matching CCM examples on both sides. Heavily soiled with rips present and the suspenders intact, there is also a large team repair on the left front leg. 6) Jofa goal pads. The identifiers are screened-on and faint, with lots of use present which includes wear and discolouration to both the inside and outsides of the pads. There are also team repairs present. These could have been worn with either the Habs or Jets. 7) Audax chest protector. This item is large and heavily soiled with marks and stains throughout, and could have been used with either Winnipeg or Montreal. We should also note that the accompanying LOA states 9 Penney items. The stick mentioned in the LOA is not included in this lot.
