Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
Featuring the extremely rare signature of Hall of Fame Senators legend Jack Darragh, we have an equally rare postcard picturing the early-20th century star, with the text all administered in Darragh’s hand including interesting hockey content. Darragh is pictured on the obverse in full uniform, with “Darragh” in white in the bottom left. Postmark stamps appear on both sides with a date of Feb 12th 1911, with the postcard addressed to an individual in Quebec. Darragh mentions within the text that he’s missed seeing the addressee at games, and mentions in closing that Ottawa beat the Montreal Wanderers 9-4 the night before. The signature appears as “Jack” in quotation marks followed by a scripted capital “D”, and it remains bold and dark with no loss. An LOA from Classic will accompany.
Just under the standard postcard size of 3 ½” x 5 ½”, a number of flaws are exhibited, including heavy toning along with some creases and corner wear. There is also some staining along the lower front, with the indentation outline of the postmark on verso showing through to the front. “Jack Darragh” has also been scripted across the address section in an unknown hand.
Jack Darragh was born in Ottawa in 1890, playing in 13 season’s for his hometown Senators from 1910-11 to 1923-24. He passed away in 1924, and was elected to the Hall of Fame posthumously in 1963.
