Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016

Steve Valiquette has signed this 2005-06 Yaroslavl Lokomotiv game-worn mask he used while playing in Russia the season after he won the Harry (Hap) Holmes Award as the AHL’s top goalie. Valiquette signed with his number 40 in bold silver paint pen on the back edge of the mask, which displays Lokomotiv’s logo painted on the forehead and his number “40” smashing through a brick wall on the chin. Steve played the next four seasons with the New York Rangers before returning to Russia to play for Moscow’s Red Army of the KHL in 2010-11. He declined an offer to play the following season with Yaroslavl. The KHL team was decimated by a tragic plane crash on the eve of the 2011-12 season, which makes this Lokomotiv game-worn mask a poignant piece that commemorates a proud Russian hockey team.
