Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016

Intriguing relic from western Canada is from one of two similar 14-card sets issued by Crescent Ice Cream of Winnipeg and picturing members of the Selkirk Fishermen. Although labelled "1924", the card is actually from the first year of a two-season promotion which began in 1923-24, offering a free brick of ice cream to those who returned 14 "pictures bearing consecutive numbers" as stated on the back of the card. Picturing team trainer Billy Bowman, this example has been slabbed VG 3 by PSA. Black and white versions and sepia tone cards exist, while another variation is the absence of "No." in front of the card number on the reverse, which is the case here. (Confirming the correct year of issue is helped by the fact that legendary goaltender Chuck Gardiner appears in one of the two sets but did not play for the Selkirk Fishermen until 1924-25, making it impossible for him to be included in the 1923-24 card set, as previously documented in the "Charlton" guide).
