Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016

Ill-fated Maple Leafs defenseman Bill Barilko packed a lot of success into his all-too-brief life, winning the Stanley Cup four times in five NHL seasons before he died in a plane crash at the age of 24 in the summer of 1951. Bashin’ Bill autographed his team-signed 1947-48 Stanley Cup champion Maple Leafs game-used stick, the first Barilko stick we have ever offered. It retains his original tape jobs on the blade and knob, with “Barilko” handwritten on the shaft below it. Syl Apps and fellow deceased HOFers Ted Kennedy, Turk Broda, Max Bentley, Harry Watson and coach Hap Day are among the 18 members of the Cup champion Leafs who have signed in black ink on this Barilko stick, which is varnished. An awesome piece of Maple Leafs history!
Other members of the 1947-48 Maple Leafs who have signed include Howie Meeker, Vic Lynn, Wild Bill Ezinicki, Joe Klukay, Jim Thomson, Gus Mortson, Sid Smith, Wally Stanowski, Nick Metz, Don Metz and Garth Boesch. The “Love and Bennett” stamp sits low on the shaft. There is a strand of tape added on the blade to hold the vintage tape job in place.
