A 1976 Olympic torch Canada's first Olympiad in Montreal is a rare find. With only 1,250 pieces produced, the torch is from one of the smallest production numbers since the Olympic flame relay was introduced in Berlin in 1936. The Montreal Olympic logo appears proudly in white on the handle of this red and black aluminum torch used in the 1976 Olympic torch relay is a shade under 26" tall. The torch, which has had no holes made in it, is attached to the 32 1/2" x 5” wood base by a u-shaped metal support that was inserted through two of the holes in the black upper portion of the torch and bolted to the base. Very nicely preserved with handling that shows in light scratches to the red handle.
A small plaque is missing at the bottom of the wood base, which has a red felt backing.
Produced for the XXIst Olympic Games by Montreal Industrial Designer Michel Dallaire, the 1976 Montreal Olympic torch’s simple lines recall antiquity and the resinous wooden torches in Greece. Fueled by super-activated olive oil (olive oil, nitropropane, and heptanes, contained in a hydrophollic cotton cartridge) the torches’ fuel was perfected with the assistance of the Department of Chemistry at L’École Polytechnique de Montréal.
