Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016

One of the most storied 19th century hockey teams, the Victoria Hockey Club of Montreal helped found the AHAC in 1886, playing in the league for a dozen seasons. The Vics were league champions from 1895-98, and Stanley Cup victors in 1895, December 1896, 1897, 1898 and February 1899. This unassuming card features the Vics fight song on front (which, oddly, has also been credited to the Winnipeg Victorias in print) along with the team flag, with advertising on verso for a train excursion offering supporters an opportunity to see the team take on Ottawa (then known as the Generals) on Feb 8th 1896. The Vics made the trip worthwhile for the faithful that shelled out the $2.00 travel fee, defeating the Generals in Ottawa 3-2.
The extremely rare 2 ¼” x 3 ¾” card has survived in admirable condition, with an edge tear on the left side that continues inward as a crease along with some very light surface stains on both the front and reverse. There is also some toning along edges of the reverse, with the bottom left corner clipped. Despite these minor flaws, important 19th century items from prominent teams are practically non-existent in the hobby, making the piece highly desirable. The card is also significant due to the fact the Victorias were both league and Stanley Cup Champions in 1896. A truly special item heralding the early game.
