Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
On this very day 93 years ago, The House that Ruth Built opened to a record crowd who witnessed a 4-1 Yankees victory including a three-run homer by Ruth, with the victims fittingly his former Boston Red Sox. We have a media photo from the historic event, picturing both Ruth along with the right field stands and scoreboard. At 6” x 8”, the sepia-toned photo shows Ruth along with bat boy Ray Kelly both in full batting stance, with The Babe clutching a cork grip H&B bat. A partially covered stamp on the reverse features Kadel & Herbert with their address in Manhattan, along with a purple date stamp of “APR 20 1923”, with the “1923” gone over in pen.
An affixed typed summary on somewhat brittle paper with headline “Record crowd attends opening of new Yankee Stadium. Babe Ruth makes his first home run” covers a portion of the K&H stamp, with an inventory number also listed. The photo exhibits wear including surface dents along with a few small creases to the glossy front, with toning and a few spots on the reverse. There is also a tiny edge tear along the left side of the top border. We should note that a double image photo such as the example offered, could have only been made at the time by taking a photo of two photos, and hence, will most likely be designated as a “Type 3” photograph.
